What is visibility? In my own words, it is the ability to be seen. As a leader, being visible is super important. It shows support, allows the leader to provide feedback and monitor safety.
Visibility shows support in a myriad of ways. The people under your leadership sees that you are invested in them and that you are there to help, if needed. A lot of times, the people one leads does not have the time to come to an office to visit. I know that in my leadership roles, I check in with my teachers when I have the opportunity to visit classrooms. I will typically ask them how can I help them or what do they need. The teachers that I mentored, I sent out a survey of how can I be of assistance, and to share their glows and grows. I would meet one on one to discuss their needs. Visibility also allows leader to see their people in action.
Providing feedback is critical to the growth of your team or the people you lead. Without being visible, one is unable to grow their people because there isn't any opportunity to provide feedback. In order for people to grow, they need feedback in a timely manner. For example, I like to ask the person I am observing, "When is a great time to discuss what I observed today?" Additionally, when a leader is visible, he or she can observe the positive things that are going on within the building and celebrate them. This shows that the leader is aware of the happenings inside the building and have the ability to highlight at the next meeting.
It is better to be proactive instead of reactive. Have you ever heard of this phrase? Leaders are to ensure that their staff is safe. One way to ensure that staff is safe is by being visible. Having a safety that is visible is also important. Leaders that monitor safety ensures that the building is operating smoothly and effectively. There are times with being visible can deescalate issues that may interfere with the safety of the staff and building. It also demonstrates awareness. An aware leader can take a proactive approach to different situations, allowing them to make sound decisions in tense moments.
Leadership visibility benefits both the staff and the leader. It provides all persons a sense of safety and security. It gives leaders the opportunity to share with the staff and other stakeholders the positive events or actions that are taking place within the building. Visibility also displays a form of support for the people one leads. Being visible is an intentional act that says so much.
